An Open Letter to Oregon

Hi lovely,

Have we met yet? If not, let us introduce ourselves. We are Jim & Ravyn. At the core, we’re just a husband and a wife. About two years ago, we decided that we’d soon call Portland home (it used to be in Indiana). We never knew how many smiles and tears would stand between us and this new dream. At the very end of the summer, we sold our house (and almost everything we owned). And in November, we bought a Jeep, and drove out to Portland to start a new chapter in our lives. Since moving here in November, we’ve seen some of the most beautiful sights … the mountains, the coast, the lush moss, the busy streets … It’s a place that’s really easy to fall in love with. We’ve met some amazing new friends, and we’re constantly in awe at how we’ve gone so long (and over 2,200 miles) without ever having these people in our lives.

It’s also important to know that we are photographers.

We aren’t the typical photographers either. We don’t really like to pose our clients … in fact, we think it’s lame that so many moments are missed with tradtional-stare-at-the-camera-photography. We believe in love … because we are in love. We absolutely love meeting our amazing clients (more on that in a second), and then spending time with them to create photos that tell the story of their love. We think laugh lines are rad, and not being able to contain your laughter is even better. I know I keep dropping the c-word (clients), and the truth is, we seriously think of them as friends. We’ve been super blessed with meeting and working with some of the best friends over the past 3 years. It was really hard to leave Indiana knowing we’d be leaving that support system behind.

So here’s the thing: We’re the new kids in town. Even though it’s been amazing so far, there are times where we realize how new we are. We’ve made friends, and we’re having a blast with them, but our photo-loving hearts are feeling a little neglected. We are looking for some really amazing clients for 2012. To be sure we’re all on the same page, we don’t take every client that comes our way. We’ve worked really hard over the past 3 years to know what kind of people make our hearts sing (what’s the use in doing something unless you love every part of it). Our clients love each other and don’t need anything other than each other to prove it. They’re adventurous, spontaneous, and so in love. Our clients are dreamers, they appreciate good photography, and gosh-darn-it, they are good people.

It took a lot of courage to write this post … after-all, we didn’t want to seem desparate. The truth of it all is that we truly love creating images and connecting with people. While ideally, our move would have been followed by a flood of inquiries, we knew we’d have to work hard to build our business back up to what it was … and even more. So, this is us asking you to spread the word. We aren’t tradtional. We aren’t cheap. We aren’t about booking and then moving on. We’re all about lasting realtionships and giving our clients an experience they can’t get anywhere else.

To say thank you for helping us get settled back into our photographic groove, we’re offering a little something for your amazing referrals. If you pass our name onto a friend and they book a wedding or photo session with us, we’ll give you a session for free. In the same spirit, anyone booking a wedding with us through the beginning of February will have their engagement session included at no additional cost. We do everything a la carte, so it’s nice to use that money towards more of our services, or maybe that perfect pair of shoes for the wedding.

Thank you so much for reading this post! We appreciate you more than you know. Contact us with any questions!

And here are a few of our favorite images … Just so you get a feel for our style:
